Education
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
– Nelson Mandela
Supporting Early Education
Education is a process that begins long before a child formally enters the traditional classroom. Della will support programs and early education opportunities that nurture, enrich, and educate children so that each child can succeed in life. As a working mother, Della also knows of the expense and difficulty of securing childcare. She will support efforts to provide affordable day care options for working families.
Investing in Students, Teachers, & Principals
Between national mandates and state requirements, effective teaching practices and authentic learning experiences are in danger of being lost. Teachers and principals know that there is no one-size-fits-all school program or curriculum that will solve the problems in our public schools. Della will support legislation that provides schools with the tools, books, and technology needed for rich learning environments. She will also seek ways to provide better compensation and build the capacity and skills of principals and teachers as organizational and instructional leaders.
Maintaining & Improving Our School Facilities
With a $500 million backlog of unfunded repairs, the 2006 Legislature took an important step in allocating $160 million to renovate classrooms at 96 schools and another $75 million for regular repair and maintenance throughout the public school system. Clearly, however, there is still a tremendous need to invest in our schools to ensure safe learning environments for our children. Della will support increased funding for our schools’ repair and maintenance needs, as well as capital improvement projects for new and improved facilities on our campuses.
“Education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world better than you found it.”
- Marian Wright Edelman
