Working for Safe Communities

Makiki is renown for its tall high rises, walk-up apartments, and single-family homes, forming one of the most densely populated neighborhoods in Hawaii.  Preventing crime and ensuring the safety of our residents are top concerns held by Della.  Della will work to ensure that enforcement agencies are provided with the proper tools to carry out their responsibilities.  Della will also work to ensure that there are funds available for preventative programs, appropriate treatment options that rehabilitate and re-integrate individuals into the community, and incarceration.

Preserving Open & Green Spaces

Although highly populated, the district is also home to open and green spaces that are testaments to the natural beauty of Hawaii.  We are fortunate to have Makiki District Park with its community gardens and open field.  We are also lucky to have the Honolulu Watershed Forest Reserve which is home to a variety of wildlife, a network of widely used trails, and the popular Hawaii Nature Center.

These forest lands and open spaces for residents must continue to be nurtured and preserved.  Doing so not only provides valuable recreational areas, but protects the watershed lands, coastal habitat, and significant cultural sites.  Della will support sensible land use planning, advocate for funding of state parks, seek creative partnerships, and strengthen efforts to preserve lands in District 25 and throughout the state to ensure that a beautiful Hawaii is available for all to enjoy.

Cleaning our Streets & Supporting the Three R’s

Trash, litter, and bulky items are blights on our beautiful Makiki-Tantalus community.  Della will work with the appropriate city and county officials and agencies to ensure that bulky item pick-up runs regularly and effectively.  Della will also support anti-littering and anti-graffiti efforts both through legislation and hands-on work in the community.

Additionally, the Three R’s, reducing, reusing, and recycling, are critical strategies to protecting the environment and preserving it for future generations.  Della will support curbside recycling efforts and environmental education programs and campaigns that raise awareness of all about the benefits of recycling.  Della will also strive to support counties in their efforts to develop effective and comprehensive plans to manage the solid waste generated by our communities.
